Live-in relationships legal in Maharashtra

India 2.0?

Its 'Salaam Namaste' all over again, but this time its happy news - the Maharashtra cabinet has approved a proposal suggesting a woman involved in a live in relationship for a "reasonable period" should get the status of a wife.

Although some folks won't quite be happy with this news. As controversial as live in relationships are, the culture has reached India from Western shores, where relationships bounce back and forth faster than a rubber ball.

People in India are definitely conservative, and the culture in the country forbids a girl and a guy to even hold hands in public. Though some cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore already have a huge population of youngsters in live in relationships.

All those youngsters can thank the Justice Mallimath Committee which said if a man and a woman are living together as husband and wife for a reasonably long period, the man shall be deemed to have married the woman according to customary rights of either party.

And the definition of the word 'wife' has been revamped to a woman living with a man for a reasonably long time. The woman would even be entitled to alimony.

it is not good for our indian social that a man and a woman is live in then we called them husband -wife.
if a boy live with his sister live in in indian culture, we can't called them husband wife, so how can it possible that a girl live in long time and we called them husband wife, although in our houses we live in our family members.

living relation ship between a guy and girl doesn't include siblings .. when they live the life of literal husband and wife without any kind of legal or ritual bondage
